Thanks for looking.

If you're reading this then you'll probably already know exactly what you're looking at.

We're a registered business and sell loads of old briefcases, but this one is something a little bit different.

This is an original 1970s Joseph Cheaney handmade leather briefcase / Gladstone bag, made in England from beautiful black pebbled leather with solid brass hardware.

Joseph Cheaney & Sons are one of Northamptonshire's great heritage shoemakers. Founded in 1886, the company became renowned for traditionally made English footwear and leather goods, and is still going strong today. Vintage Cheaney briefcases like this are considerably harder to find than their shoes, particularly examples that have survived for around half a century in this sort of condition.

It's a proper old-school executive case: beautifully made, extremely substantial and with loads of character. The wide Gladstone-style opening also makes it much more practical than a conventional flat attaché case.

Condition

This is the best bit.

We sell a lot of old leather bags and briefcases, and after 40 or 50 years they're normally battered and bruised with plenty of battle scars. This one genuinely looks as though it has seen very little use.

The black pebbled leather across the front, back and handle is remarkably close to pristine. There are just a couple of minor scuffs around the edges and base, as you'd expect with something of this age.

The brass hardware has some light scratches and tarnishing from age, but even more remarkably the original key is still present.

It's difficult to imagine finding many 1970s working briefcases in better original condition than this one. Please have a good look through all the photographs as they form part of the description.
