Vintage American 50 Star Flag Rope Toggle Nautical 54x26 US Navy San Diego 80's

Here's a fabulous opportunity to own a genuine vintage American 50-star flag, believed to date from the late 1970s or early 1980s, with a particularly interesting history!

This flag was acquired from a former US Navy officer who was stationed in San Diego, California, during the 1970s and 1980s.

According to his recollection, this was originally a flag obtained during his time in the Navy, and he believes it is an actual US Navy-issued flag rather than a commercially produced example. Its traditional construction and surviving fittings certainly make it an interesting piece of American maritime memorabilia.

Unlike modern lightweight polyester flags, this example is made from substantial cotton fabric, with visible hand stitching and the slightly irregular finish you would expect from traditional construction.

It also features a reinforced canvas edge, complete with its original rope and wooden toggle for fastening to a flagpole.

Measuring an impressive 54 x 26 inches, it's a substantial flag, suitable for display aboard a smaller vessel, outside a home or as part of a collection of American naval memorabilia.

Perhaps not quite large enough for an aircraft carrier, though!

We also believe it was made in the USA, consistent with its reported history and period and most importantly, the stamp - this  was definitely hand made and hand finished.

The canvas edging carries an original “1½” size marking.

With its beautifully aged appearance, traditional construction and US Navy connection, this is a lovely piece of American history.

CONDITION

Very good vintage condition, especially considering its estimated 40–50 years of age!

The fabric remains in very good overall condition, with strong colours and the original fastening fittings intact. No rips, no holes, no loose stitching, no fading, no problems

As you would expect from a genuine old flag, there is some light yellowing and occasional marks to the white stripes.

These may respond to careful cleaning, although we haven't attempted this ourselves.

Personally, we rather like the aged appearance! It gives the flag character and reflects its considerable history. If you want a shiny new one they're available from Temu in China...much cheaper but they'll never have the kudos and gravitas of this one!
