Vintage Antique Swagger Stick Sterling Silver Bamboo Cane EMW Birmingam Uk 1909
Thanks for looking
Great opportunity to own a genuine piece of history!
Im a professional business seller on here and we travel all over the country collecting interesting pieces and selling them to collectors all over the world - mostly vintage clothing or older electronics.
I'll be completely honest here - I bought this from one of our reliable suppliers as its such an interesting piece, however I'm not an expert on Silver or Swagger Sticks so this is something of a departure from the normal type of item we supply....I'm really hoping someone out there who's reading this can perhaps give me some advice and further details on this. It's obviously a beautiful, very rare item and I've done a number of Google searches when trying to get further details. Unfortunately, the search results turn up with different answers every time so my info might be incorrect! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
What I've found out so far (and this might be inaccurate but I think it's roughly correct) is...
Details
▪︎ Antique Swagger Stick
▪︎ Made in Birmingam Uk by EMW
▪︎ 1918
▪︎ Bamboo Cane
▪︎ Sterling Silver top
▪︎ Brass bottom tip
▪︎ Total length - 35 inches
Condition
Very good! The bamboo itself is perfect - no cracks or scuffs anywhere. The silver end pieced have plenty of dents in them but are completely intact and the hallmark is clearly visible
Swagger sticks were quite a cool item (not to be confused with a walking stick) - they started off as a replacement for swords when it became socially unacceptable to walk around with a massive blade! Only the rich and powerful would have carried one of these as it was an expensive item and represented authority and nobility. Swagger sticks fell out of fashion after WW1 when there were many injured soldiers using walking sticks - apparently a sign of weakness and fragility (shame really but its good that we have evolved beyond those attitudes).
As mentioned above, if you know anything more please pass on the information
Pricing
This has been incredibly difficult! I've checked trending prices and they seem to go from anywhere between £100 and £400! Obviously, the maker and year affect the price...as I'm a novice I've tried to keep the price towards the lower end of the market but again - I'd appreciate any advice!
