Here's my old graduation Mortarboard from the mid 80's. It was handmade by Ravenscroft & Willis in Liverpool.

I was going to keep it but to be honest it's not something I'll be using again anytime soon so it's time it went on new adventures with another successful graduate!

I remember at the time I was torn between buying or renting but decided I wanted to own my own personal robe & Mortarboard so I bought them...its a nice thing to remind you of your Uni days and you can always pass it down the generations (I don't have children hence the sale!).

I had a quick look at the prices of these things. This was expensive back in the 80's but I can't believe how much they've gone up in price - almost £250!! (Yes...really!). Even just renting one is far more expensive than buying this one. If you rent one you can guess what it's been through. Unless you get really lucky the chances are that any hat you rent has been through hundreds of graduations...and the parties afterwards. The last thing you want is a shabby, dirty, drink, vomit and sweat stained hat for that critical graduation photo! This one really is mint.

Size is 6 7/8 inches circumference so its halfway between a small and a medium (to be honest, because of the shape of Mortarboards they're pretty much one size fits all unless you have a head like a huge, swollen watermelon!

This is the best part! I wore the hat for a maximum of ten minutes - then I went drinking and the hat went straight back in the box where it has remained for the last forty years. It looks brand new...because it basically is!
