As far as im aware it was originally designed in the Victorian era and used as a swagger stick - an American designe that they reproduced in the 1970's - this is one of the 70's American models. Recently, they've started to reproduce them again in India - you'll see the ads on here selling them for about £35. The brass head on the modern ones is fine but the stick is nowhere near as good quality. Even though its almost half a century old its still in very good condition. You can see it was well used as the brass is rubbed down on the beak and the are a few chips in the paintwork on the cane - nothing serious. No cracks or dents and it'll function well for decades.
