You're reading about what is obviously a unique, one off item! We sell loads of old trunks and chests but I've never seen anything like this before.
We can tell it was made in the 1960's in the UK by the materials and style of riveting used in the design and manufacture. It's made from vulcanised fibreboard which is an incredibly tough but light material pioneered by Globetrotter for their suitcases. Not a cheap material and this box has obviously been custom built with a specific purpose in mind...the problem is I can't even begin to imagine what it was made for! Obviously, whatever it was designed to contain was something very expensive. Ordering a custom built case can't have been cheap and it's fully padded out with quite a thick layer of sponge to protect the contents. Because of the shape I can only think it was for some sort of musical instrument or maybe expensive camera equipment, possibly something to do with a magician? The box was designed with reinforced edges and corners so built for a lot of rough travel!
Anyway, I'm sure someone out there will have a use for it. Modern custom cases begin at around £300 so if you have something delicate that you need to move this is a practical option.
As mentioned, the case is made from vulcanised fibreboard so is very tough. It has a dual clip closure that secures it safely. All corners have additional cover. Inside there's a 2 inch layer of sponge that will pad out whatever you're transporting and there's a handle on top for ease of movement
Its quite a big box - measurements are 38 (height) x 53 (length) x 44 (width).
Condition is very good. There are a few marks on the outer casing but no cracks or holes - it'll work now exactly as it was designed to do over half a century ago!
