When I saw this I had to get it immediately - its a really cool piece! I was really tempted to keep it for myself - its an incredibly rare item, I can't find any more available for sale on the planet and the last one to come up for sale went for £160 - so grab a serious bargain!
Details
I've done some research on this and from the limited amount of information available I'm pretty sure this is a late 1960's Luna Scope telescope made by Super Optics in Sabae City, Japan. The magnification is 25 x 40m so whilst decent you won't spot any extraterrestrial life on distant planted with this.
What makes this model particularly interesting is that it was designed in the shape of the Apollo 11 rocket. A huge event at the time and its what this makes it such an attractive item - a beautiful piece with all the right curves in all the right places!
Additionally, the telescope comes with the original tripod - this was made by Zenith but also from the late 60's so the design features flow. This still has its original leather case.
The scope itself measures 30cm and the tripod extends to approx 5 feet at full length.
Condition
This is the best part! It has obviously been very well cared for (or never used) by the previous guardian. It is in such good condition it could have been built this morning and easily pass for being brand new. Not a single scuff or scratch anywhere. The lenses are clean and clear. Its is fully functional and works just as well now as the day it was built. The leather case is a bit battered over time but still works fine.
